Southern Utah Tuacahn/Shakepeare tour
Last year, we rented a bus
and went to Southern Utah for a few days to attend plays and musicals at the
Tuacahn theater in St. George and the Shakespeare festival in Cedar City. Those that attended had a great time and many
have asked if we will be doing it again this year. We need at least 35 people in order to cover
the costs of the bus. If we get enough
to register we would plan to go in late July or early August. Leave on a Wed. morning and go to Tuacahn to
watch either Tarzan or Cats. Then, we
would spend the night in a hotel in St. George.
Thursday morning we would have a CME meeting and then head to Cedar City
for a matinee play in Cedar
City. We would then have a dutch oven dinner before
we go to another play in the evening. We
would stay at a hotel in Cedar
City that night and drive
back early Friday morning. This plan
could change as we look into play and bus availablility. If you would sign up to go, PLEASE email or
call Spencer at the Collegium office ASAP (801) 802-0449.. His email is swoolley@collegiumaesculapium.org. The rough cost would be $500/person. It would include two nights hotel, all meals,
transportation, CME and play tickets.

Humanitarian
Spotlight - HEARTT
Health Education and Relief Through Teaching (HEARTT) is a
not-for-profit corporation, founded for the purpose of providing overall health
care and health training to underdeveloped communities and countries. Their primary goal is to assist these
communities with building or rebuilding a successful self- sustaining health
care system! This will be accomplished through facilitating the acquisition of
needed medical supplies and equipment, providing direct health care while
simultaneously educating local health care providers and communities. Our
education goals include but are not limited to: continuing medical education
for health care providers, medical school/residency/ nursing/physician
extenders training educational programs, updating practicing health care
professionals on the latest technology, overall health and wellness education
and programs for the community.
HEARTT’s
founders have witnessed first hand the inequalities that are ever present in
health care systems of developing countries and are committed to making a
positive impact in these areas. Our volunteers also share the same passion
demonstrated by them volunteering their expertise, time and resources to help
us accomplish our goals. Please join us in giving the children and people of
these communities a fair chance for good health.
As we conclude yet another rewarding year of growth, we are
preparing to host our annual 3-day symposium and workshop this July in Providence, RI.
Prior symposia have been exciting opportunities for all of our volunteers to
meet and exchange knowledge, ideas, and experiences. As HEARTT continues
to expand its collaborative network, we look forward to bringing together yet
another truly inspirational team of health care providers, educators, and
volunteers. The symposium will be
attended and include presentations by the faculty of our partnering
institutions as well as presentations from some of our core HEARTT team
members. We will be covering the logistics of Liberia pre-departure preparation
and planning for this year's lineup of volunteers, as well as project ideas,
research agendas, and guidelines for clinical operations. We will also be
discussing approaches to the diagnosis and management of disease processes in
low-resource settings, particularly those commonly encountered while working in
Liberia.
As a member of the team, your attendance and participation at the symposium are
requested, particularly if your first volunteer experience in Liberia will be
taking place in 2010 - 2011. Recognizing that some may not have the time
to attend the entire 3 days, we welcome your involvement for any segment of the
workshop. Please note that an evening reception and dinner will be held
on Saturday, July 17th. Details to follow.

Seventy four people from all over the
country and Canada joined
the Collegium Aesculapium tour to Israel
last month. They spent two weeks touring the Mediterranean coast,
Galilee, the Golan Heights, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem.
Old friendships were renewed and many new ones made. We appreciate the efforts
of Dr. Kimball Taylor, Dr. Ed Heyes, Jill Heyes, Bruce
Woolley, Spencer Woolley and Boomerang Tours for planning, organizing
and executing an excellent tour. Kim, Ed, Jill and Bruce taught many
doctrinal messages at the sacred locations. Israeli guides taught about
culture, history, religion and archeology.
The tour started at Joppa/Tel Aviv and continued to Caesarea, Haifa, Mt Carmel, Jezreel Valley, Megiddo, and Tiberias
on the shore of the Sea of Galilee
[and that was just the first day]. Other areas included Nazareth,
Cana, Mt of Beatitudes,
feeding the five thousand, and Caesarea Philippi
at the feet of Mt Hermon. The third day we journied to Jerico and then to
Jerusalem.
The swim in the Dead Sea is an experience
never to be forgotten. Tours of en Gedi and Masada taught
significant history. Four days in Jerusalem
were highlighted by attending a sacrament meeting in the BYU Jerusalem
Center. Additionally, Kim
arranged special tours to the Jerusalem City Hall building,
the Hadassah Medical Center and the Kennesset (Israeli
Senate.)
An upcoming edition will include the “Specialty
Pearls” section. If you have a “Pearl” of information
about what is new in your specialty or medicine in general, please send it to newsletter@collegiumaesculapium.org
and we will include it in an upcoming newsletter.
