Service

There is much need for volunteer medical service among the less advantaged, even along the Mormon Corridor. The Collegium Aesculapium Executive Committee is very excited to have this clearinghouse of different types of medical services on the Collegium website. Please explore the State hotlinks to the left. Clicking on the hotlink will open the next page that explains the medical service opportunities. We invite you to explore the opportunities that interest you.

Below, you will also find information regarding Missionary service for Medical professionals.

Mission service

If you are considering a medical service mission (i.e. Area Medical Advisor or mission nurse), opportunities that are available in the next 18 months are on the Senior Missionary Opportunities page (Missionary Opportunities Search (churchofjesuschrist.org)). However, the missionary department also plans long into the future regarding medically-assigned full-time missions. For more information about missionary service with medical assignments, please call Mark Slight at 801-240-7740

Area Medical Advisers or AMA (full-time mission):

This is a full-time mission call to serve in one of 45 areas in the world. AMAs are retired physicians of all specialties. The length of this mission assignment is generally 18 months, allowing for overlap with the physician who will be the replacement. In this role, physicians oversee and advise 8–15 missions. Their companions serve as full-time missionaries who can assist their spouse in the AMA responsibilities as well as mission or area office projects as they are needed. AMA responsibilities may include:

  • serving as full-time missionary when not dealing with AMA issues,

  • advising mission leaders and mission health advisers regarding difficult medical situations that arise with missionaries based on Missionary Health Services policies and guidelines (AMAs are not licensed to practice medicine in the areas to which they are assigned nor are they required to obtain malpractice insurance or maintain a medical license),

  • to help relieve the burden of mission leaders from medical problems, allowing them to better focus on bringing people unto Christ.

  • developing relationships with local providers and facilities and assessing their competencies,

  • providing education on prevention and self-care practices,

  • attending in-person or virtual Mission Health Councils for the missions they are assigned,

  • accompanying missionaries home who require assistance or supervision,

  • informing and coordinating with Missionary Department leadership regarding difficult situations that may require an early medical release or special attention,

  • entering notes into eMED (the Missionary Medical tracking system).

  • Basic computer skills are necessary.

Mission Health Adviser (Full-time and Part-time Mission): These individuals are medical professionals who provide assessment and advice to one mission president and his wife regarding health challenges that the missionaries may be faced with. They do not practice medicine but instead give advice and ascertain that the care being provided by local providers is adequate.

Responsibilities include:

• providing over-the-phone assessment and advise based on Missionary Department Health Services policies and guidelines,

• providing assistance to determine if a visit to a local care, urgent care, or ER is needed, and approving the visit as directed by the mission president,

• providing education on preventive and self-care suggestions,

• attending the Mission Health Council,

• entering notes into eMED (the Missionary Medical tracking system),

• serving as full-time missionaries when not dealing with medical issues (if serving parttime, discuss with your mission president how he would have you serve when not dealing with medical issues).

Note: Church service missionaries who are practicing physicians may serve as MHAs. They do not charge for medical care they provide for missionaries within their mission because of the conflict of interest that exists from sitting on the Mission Health Council.

Note: Senior service missionaries who are practicing physicians may serve as MHAs. However, once set apart as a missionary, the Brethren have determined that MHAs must not practice medicine with missionaries, regardless of whether they bill or not. They may use their experience to advise missionaries and mission leaders but should not issue prescriptions, write orders, order testing, perform procedures, or do anything else that would commonly require a license in the USA.”
